How It Works

Overview

Workshops provide intensive focus on manuscript preparation (ordering, revising, and swapping out poems), then poets meet with the decision-makers: poetry press editors from established area presses.

Preparation

Following registration poets will be given pre-conference assignments to complete and bring to the conference for review with workshop leader. These assignments are designed to help the poet prepare both the manuscript and its presentation to an editor, by helping them focus on the elements that make their collection unique.

Poets will also send a copy of their entire manuscript no later than 2 weeks prior to the conference for pre-conference analysis and evaluation.

Timeline

  • Arrival at the Brandt House on Friday, February 19, between 4 pm and 6 pm. On Friday evening after dinner and introductions and overview of the weekend. The conference will then proceed as follows:

  • On Saturday, at 9 am, manuscript preparation workshop begins. Focus is on reviewing the pre-conference assignments, ordering, revising and/or swapping out, etc.

  • Publisher/editor arrives around 6 pm and joins the participants for dinner at 7. There will be an after-dinner Q&A with the publisher.

  • On Sunday, from 9 am until around 5 pm, poets will meet with the publisher and have a one-on-one evaluation and discussion of their manuscript within that group.

    Conclusion

  • On Monday, from 9-12, poets meet with workshop leader for a final wrap-up session to review editorial input and to help devise goals appropriate to guiding the collection toward publication. The conclusion of the Monday recap session marks the end of the conference. Departure at 12 pm.
