Details Regarding Location, Dates, and More

The Round House: Where It Happens

Located in Colrain, MA--a country town reminiscent of villages in Ireland--the Round House is close to the Connecticut River and the Vermont border, and only three hours from NYC & two from Boston. The main building, one of the most unique human dwellings on this planet, sits on a hill overlooking two river valleys off to the East.

Truly magical both inside and out, the Round House is a four story building of 14 sides with over a dozen decks, sparkled by stained glass windows and a domed center with a cupola on top. Inside, it appears as if an inspired Hobbit were the architect: open common rooms circled by lots of secret hiding places.

On the second and third floors are charming berth-style sleeping cubbies.

From the grand central meeting room on the first floor, other rooms radiate for cozier meeting spots: the library, kitchen, dining and sun rooms, a music room and lounge.

There is also a well-stocked library, abundant theatrical toys (costumes, hats...), musical instruments including percussion and string instruments, a piano and organ, and the inner structure is acoustically impressive.

Peripheral structures include a potter's studio, a five bed cottage, a green house, barn houses for goats, an outdoor wood-heated bread/pizza oven, and a cedar-lined sauna.

Please note that we will make all reservations and arrangements for lodging and meals for conference participants. Directions and other details will be sent to all registrants along with the pre-conference materials.

    Location/Directions/Transportation

The Round House is located on 68 Van Nuys Road in Colrain, Massachusetts. If you are driving, the nearest major intersection is I-91 and Rt. 2 in northwest MA. From Greenfield, MA, on Rt. 2, take Colrain Street north to Colrain Road, right turn on Colrain to Green River Road, then right on Green River to Smead Hill Road and take a left, follow to Van Nuys. The lodge is a tough search on Van Nuys and cellphones are iffy. Go to http://maps.yahoo.com if you want to see a layout of the area and/or how it relates to travel from NYC, Boston, or points west.

The best place to arrive for flight transportation is Hartford's Bradley International Airport. That airport is about an hour away. There is a shuttle service straight from the airport to the Round House. It is called Valley Transporter and is in Amherst, MA. (413) 253-1350. You must make arrangements directly with them for the pick up at either plane, train or bus station, and please do so several days in advance. Make sure and send us your ETA. And don't forget to arrange for a return shuttle on the final day of the conference, preferably 2 PM or later.

Trains arrive at both Springfield and Amherst. See the Amtrak web site for schedules and rates. If you don't want to take a train, there are also buses directly to Greenfield from some places. See the Greyhound bus website for details.

NOTE: From NYC it takes about 5 hours by bus to Greenfield.

There is no other fee pertaining to the conference. Poets will receive pre-conference manuscript preparation assignments and other materials several weeks before the conference begins.
